The Gen2 Higher Education Department was formed in 2005 and delivers a range of higher nationals and degree programmes for over 300 students per annum. Programmes range from HNCs and HNDs to Foundation and BEng Honours Degrees.

  • The course is normally delivered over 2 years (day release).

Course Aim

This course is designed to provide students with a consolidated body of knowledge in Nuclear Plant and Process Technology as applied within plant engineering. It also delivers a higher education experience that reflects the demands of innovation and integrated activities in industrial engineering environments.

Student Prerequisites

All applicants will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course.

This programme is suitable for candidates who have achieved a Merit in the FdEng Plant Engineering (Nuclear Plant & Process Technology) qualification. Candidates who have passed this qualification with a Pass may also be considered, but will be required to successfully complete a Level 5 bridging programme.

Alternatively, eligibility may be granted to candidates who hold a vocational qualification from another institution, provided it meets the following criteria:

  • In engineering or a closely related subject
  • Comprises 240 credits, including at least 120 credits at FHEQ Level 5 or SCQF Level 8 (e.g., DipHE, HND, or Foundation Degree)
  • Includes successful completion of a Level 5 bridging programme

Please note: Candidates entering with alternative qualifications will not be eligible for the Level 6 Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer Degree Apprenticeship, but may enrol on a commercial basis.

Location and Delivery Model

The course is delivered at the Energus facility by Gen2’s Higher Education Department (University of Cumbria) on a day-release basis. Learners typically complete 80 credits per academic year.

Assessment methods include a balanced combination of coursework, examinations, written reports, and viva voce presentations, ensuring learners gain both academic and applied competencies.

Delivery Plan and Commitment:

The qualification requires 20% of time from the student’s normal working week to be committed to the qualification for the duration of the programme. This time must be away from normal work duties.
