Science Manufacturing Technician Level 3

Overview:

This course is ideal for candidates who work in the science manufacturing industry and are looking to gain a nationally recognised apprenticeship. A science manufacturing technician will operate the systems and equipment, involved in the production of products, working in varied conditions including wearing specialist safety equipment, shift work and on sites running 365 day operations.

Student Pre-Requisites:

The entry requirement for this apprenticeship will be decided by each employer, but may typically be three GCSEs including English, Maths and a relevant science subject at Grades 4-9 (old grade c or above). New apprentices also have to successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude test.

Location:

Training for this apprenticeship will take place at a Gen2 centre based in West Cumbria, Carlisle and Furness.

Students are with their employer from day one and will study their taught components at an agreed Gen2 centre one day per week. The students are visited by a Gen2 assessor in the workplace approximately every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress.

Programme Components:

Science manufacturing technicians are able to:

  • Both independently and within a team start-up a manufacturing batch or continuous process in line with appropriate Standard Operating Procedures, understanding the principles of operation.

  • Both independently and within a team operate a manufacturing batch or continuous process in line with appropriate Standard Operating Procedures, understanding the principles of operation.

  • Both independently and within a team shut down/complete a run of the manufacturing batch or continuous process in line with appropriate Standard Operating Procedures, understanding the principles of operation.

  • Work safely in a science manufacturing environment, understanding personal responsibility for Health, Safety and the Environment and principles of risk management

  • Understand and follow quality procedures to meet the requirements of quality standards relevant to the workplace.

  • Understand the internal and external regulatory environment pertinent to the sector and the employer and comply with regulations proficiently.

  • Control and monitor a process or plant and equipment, effectively, efficiently and securely, and resolve problems or correct abnormal conditions.

  • Complete documentation relevant to the manufacturing process including relevant calculations.

  • Understand the business environment in which the company operates including personal role within the organisation, ethical practice and codes of conduct.

  • Participate in continuous performance improvement.

  • Develop and apply theoretical knowledge of relevant science and technology and its application to the required sector & job role.

Delivery Plan and Commitment:

The qualification requires 20% of time from the student’s normal working week to be committed to the qualification for the duration of the programme. This time must be away from normal work duties.

Qualifications Gained:

The following qualifications are not a mandatory requirement for the apprenticeship standard but are typically requested by employers:

  • PAAVQSET Level 3 Diploma in Processing Industries Operations
  • C&G level 3 Diploma in Process Technology
  • Minimum Level 2 English and maths

On successful completion students will gain a Science Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship
